Changes from Mao Rules 3.9 to Mao Rules 4.0 (June 30th, 2017)
The End game rules were modified so that the “The Game of Mao has ended” statement must come at the end of the player’s turn, and that spectators and expelled players have to move.
The eating and drinking rules were removed.
The “play pile” and “take pile” names were added.
The Replenishing the Take Pile section was added.
The 20 card expulsion rule was added, as a backup to the double dealt rule.
The cards during condition rules were modified to include the humiliation dance.
Serious business rules were added to the Point of Order section.
The 10-second rule for no movement on a person’s turn was added.
The Hand Motions section was added.
Changes from Mao Rules 4.0 to Mao Rules 4.1 (September 1st-5th, 2017)
The Mao Rules 4.1 were translated into the Spanish language
The humiliation dance was removed from the rules.
Grammar mistakes in both English y en español were edited
The “Non-Rule Related Notes” Section was created and amended at the end
Changes from Mao Rules 4.1 to Mao Rules 4.2 (November 18th-19th, 2017)
Putting up the middle finger was added as “cursing” in the rules.
The end of the game rules were modified for mistakes ending the game, when the number of cards a person leads to expulsion, and what happens when multiple players are expulsed.
The “you” from ”Thank you” was exempt from being a personal pronoun.
Homonyms were added as acceptable rhymes in the “Rhymefest” rule.
The time limit for the “Rhymefest” rule was changed to 20 seconds.
The status of phrases with the same last word(s) for a rhyme in the “Rhymefest” rule as a previously stated rhyme was modified.
The maximum amount of time a player can make a move was set to 1 minute.
The beating-up rules were modified to negate penalty cards for self-defense.
The “Most number of 666 rules in a game” list was updated.
The rules in Gameplay were revised so that a play is not required to put down a valid card onto the “play pile” if a card is available on their turn.
The Executive Mao Board and Learning How to Play Mao sections were added.
The Hand Motions section was modified to add the countdown during “Rhymefest”.
The automatic pause rule during shuffling was modified.
Changes from Mao Rules 4.2 to Mao Rules 4.3 (March 7th, 2018)
The Switcheroo rules were modified to clarify its effect on the turn of a skipped player by the Skippy rule.
The time limit to put down cards during a Point of Order was set as 3 seconds.
Shoe in a Microwave Confirmed was removed as a required rule.
The question about turns during a Point of Order and Pause was dissolved.
Changes from Mao Rules 4.3 to Mao Rules 4.4 (March 12th, 2018)
The following are changes made after the Mao Tournament in New Orleans
Neil’s Rule was added, affirming that spectators are not allowed to talk about gameplay that will interfere with the players.
The “Most number of 666 rules in a game” list was updated to 3 666 occurrences.
The Devil’s Advocate rules were modified so that with 3 or more 666 occurrences, a religious object must be placed near the cards.
Combining “Mao” with other rules with only one card left was ruled as acceptable.
The End of the Game rules were modified so that only 3 penalty cards and no other penalty cards would be given if a player mistakenly ended the game.
Discussing another player’s cards during a Point of Order was ruled as acceptable.
Forgetting a rule that requires the participation of other players was ruled to result in the rule not occuring.
Scangas’s Three Laws were added, affirming that:
1. A player receives a penalty card for misleading other players.
2. A player cannot use a penalty card received during their turn as a card to put into the “play pile”.
3. A player cannot show their cards to other players.
The rules for time constraints during a game were added.
Tips about the Mao Tournament was added to Tips and Tricks.
Changes from Mao Rules 4.4 to Mao Rules 4.5 (December 1st, 2019)
The “Rhymefest” section was amended so that the use of slant rhymes vs exact rhymes, as well as rhymes which players are unaware exists, are dealt with.
The “Wilkinson Lapse Clause” was added, which defines the point of time in which the next player’s turn begins and the appropriate penalties as a result.
Changes from Mao Rules 4.5 to Mao Rules 4.6 (May 31st, 2020)
“Jess’ Clause” was added, which clarifies that a player does not have to state a suit change after placing a Jack on the play pile.
